OVERVIEW

Many people have visited both Prague and Munich but know very little of the splendour, the history or the culture of what lies in between. Perhaps you are one of them.

 

Let us transport you to another world, the lands of ancient Bohemia where you’ll find vibrant towns and cities, exciting tales of battles and wars that scarred and ultimately formed modern day Czechia (Czech Republic). Our tour doesn’t just end there, though. We’ll take you to our favourite of all the German states, Bavaria. You’ll visit the beautiful walled city of Nuremberg and the industrial city of Ingolstadt, famous for its auto industry (Think Audi!).

 

You’ll also experience the European Capital of Culture in 2025, Chemnitz in Saxony, and learn why it was called Karl Marx Stadt and then renamed back to Chemnitz. Visit its wonderful Railway Museum, some of which is just like a graveyard for old locomotives and part of which is run as a proper museum. Join us on a visit to Colditz Castle…yes it is a real castle, with hundreds of years of history. It was always much more than just an internment camp for flying officers.

 

Throughout this tour, you’ll stay in lovely superior quality, four and five star hotels, featuring spacious accommodation. You can even upgrade to a suite, if you wish and if we have any left. You’ll dine well on local produce, usually with a choice of menu and diet. Our long-time friend and coach driver, Helmut Krumrey, will accompany us for much of the journey, safely driving us to locations not so accessible by local transportation.

 

IMPORTANT NOTES;

This is a tour we have wanted to offer for several years and have had trouble fitting it in. Now it’s here and we hope you’ll join us. Please note, however, the tour is not suitable for anyone with anything more than moderate walking difficulties. There will be quite a bit of walking over cobbled streets and, in two or three places, short but quite steep hills to climb along with quite a few steps. We always do our best to accommodate everyone but we would have great difficulty doing so in certain locations on this tour. You would simply have to spend the day at your leisure, if the tours were too much for you. If you are concerned, please call us.

This morning, shortly after breakfast we travel by train through the gorgeous Czech countryside to the hill-town of Karlovy Vary, famous for its hot springs and fin-de-siecle hotels. It’s a four-hour journey approximately. We have four nights here at the splendid Spa Hotel Imperial, where you’ll have time to relax and enjoy this beautiful spa town. It’s also where our friend and driver, Helmut, will meet us later in the tour.

 

Note. This hotel is in a beautiful tranquil location, about half a mile out of town, atop a hill. Taxis can be used to get in and out of town, if the walk is too difficult. The Spa Hotel Imperial is regarded as one of the very best in the area.

We have the day to relax. It’s a free day! Enjoy a bit of shopping or let yourself be pampered with one of the spa treatments. Stretch out in the sauna or on the terrace, whatever takes your fancy.

Saturday, 12 June 2027

Today we’ll have an interesting but not too energetic excursion, first to the historic city of Cheb, one of the oldest and most important cities of ancient Bohemia. Never heard of it? That’s a shame, as it is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Czechia. We’ll have time to wander and enjoy it. We’ll travel on, through the hills to Marianske Lazne, or in its German form, Marienbad. Full of beautiful spa parks, romantic colonnades and charming pavilions, this city impresses even the most doubting visitor. The town is endowed with many healing mineral springs and revels in a unique atmosphere that attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to soak up this atmosphere. It is a place where history meets today. After some free time, we’ll return to our hotel.

We have a busy but exciting day ahead of us. travelling to one of Germany’s most amazing cities, Nuremberg. We’ll depart around 09.30 and our first stop will be at the Nazi Parade Grounds and the newly re-opened , fascinating Documentation Centre. Afterwards, we’ll head into the city. There’ll be a short guided walking tour. You’ll have some free time before we go for dinner in a local restaurant. After dinner, back to the hotel in Regensburg.

 

Note: Walking at the Nazi Parade Grounds and the Doku Centre is easy. Nuremberg old town has a lot of cobbled streets. Any hills can be mostly avoided.

This morning, we say farewell to our friend, Helmut, who will have driven us safely through some wonderful scenery, to exciting sights.


Today’s a free day but, if you wish, we can take an optional excursion to the Walhalla Monument, a neo-Greco acropolis housing busts of famous poets and politicians, kings and emperors, with an impressive view over the Danube. If you wish, you could try out the amazing Kaiser Therme spa, not far from the hotel. We could even do both!

Notes: The excursion to the Walhalla Monument, featured in the photo, is by ferry. On arrival, you will have 360 steps to climb, or walk up a winding road. It is a wonderful experience but not for the faint hearted.

 

The Kaiser Therme is a superb spa complex, complete with saunas and steam rooms. It is approximately 10km / 6 miles away. It can be reached by local bus or by taxi.

It’s not too early a start for home. Taxi to the station around 10.45am. Train departs 11.17am, arriving at Munich Airport at 12.41. After check-in, you’ll have plenty of time for lunch at one of Munich’s great selection of dining venues.

ITINERARY

Tuesday, 08 June 2027

Check-in at Belfast International before 08.15am. See flight details opposite. Our flight arrives early afternoon in Prague, from where we travel to our city-centre hotel by private minibuses. After checking in, we’ll have a short walking tour in the city.

Evening meal at a local restaurant or hotel.

 

Wednesday, 09 June 2027

We’ll not start too early today but, after breakfast, we’ll pay a visit to Prague Castle, one of the largest such fortifications in the world. We’ll travel there and back by local bus, but for the more adventurous, we can walk down from the castle to the city below. (This tour involves lots of cobbles and some small hills. If you wish to walk down to the town, it is quite a steep hill but fine for most people)

 

Take a break for lunch. Then we’ll have a walking tour of Prague’s highlights. Coffee and cake at one of Prague’s famous and stunning cafes. Prague city centre is mainly cobbled streets. Free time to relax.

Dinner at a local restaurant or at the hotel.

Sunday. 13 June 2027

After an early breakfast, we’ll depart around 09.00am for the city of Chemnitz in Saxony, Germany. It has a fascinating history, both ancient and modern, and houses the German Railway Museum, a huge sprawling site which will leave a lasting impression on you. 

From here, we’ travel on to Colditz Castle, where we’ll be shown around by extremely interesting tour guides. Learn about the castle’s history and the part it played in the Second World War.

We plan to drive on to Leipzig, where we can spend some time in the old town before the drive back to Karlovy Vary.

 

Note: There is some walking over very uneven surfaces at the Railway museum. There is quite a steep climb up to Colditz Castle from where the bus parks and it’s over cobbles. Leipzig Old Town is fairly flat but streets are cobbled.

 

Monday, 14 June 2027.

After checking out around 09.00, we’ll depart for Czechia’s second city, Plzen (Pilsen). We’ll have a guided tour there, approximately two hours and some free time on your own. The tour will include a visit to the cathedral and will require you to climb a number of steps. If the tour is too much, we can preclude you, so you can relax on your own or with others who wish to opt out. We continue our journey to Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany.

We have four nights here at the Eurostars Maximillian Hotel, smack in the city centre. Dinner at the hotel or a local restaurant.

After dinner, we’ll have a walking tour around the old town.

 

Note: Both Plzen and Regensburg are full of cobbled streets.

 

Tuesday, 15 June 2027

Today’s excursion is not too taxing! (Famous last words…)

We’ll take the one hour drive to Ingolstadt, home of Audi cars. First, we’ll enjoy a visit of the Audi Forum, where we can follow the history of Audi cars. The forum has a number of places to eat and plenty of toilets. We’ll travel into the medieval city centre, where you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the city and its lovely shops, cafes and terraces. We’ll return to the hotel mid afternoon, in good time to relax before dinner.

 

Note: Walking in the forum is easy. The historic centre is full of cobbled streets.

Although this gorgeous hotel is just over half a mile from the centre, there is a bus stop right at the door. Built in the early 1900s, Hotel Imperial is a well-known landmark in Karlovy Vary.
